I've been trying to play more and more with working digitally, and have to say it's quite enjoyable. Someday I would like to move over and do more projects all digitally, but right now I still have a lot more fun and am happier with doing inking traditionally. But here are some 20 minute digital sketches in Manga Studio!

This weekend was pretty productive as well! I've been tinkering around with my new website, and am getting closer and closer to having it ready to launch! I'm pretty pumped about the new layout, now I just gotta get things working right!

Also, I've been working on something special for y'all which will probably come to fruition by the summer! More details on that soon!

And I went over to a bud's house and saw the new Tim and Eric Billion Dollar$ Movie, and if you are a fan of their show, I don't think you'll be disappointed! Here's the trailer!

Also, just got some good news the other day that I'll be doing a short for something I'm a huge fan of, and can't wait to talk more about that later! Also, setting up new layouts for the con season. Here's a loose sketch of what I'm thinking this year! Hopefully I'll have this ready for Emerald City Comic Con in 2 months in Seattle!

Stayin' Minimal

So this week with my face sketches I wanted to stay a little more minimal with the detail. I was trying to just squint and draw these faces with shapes rather than line, but I know I still do some line work! :D Oh well, hope you enjoy!

I've been doing everything in Manga Studio lately. Well except for me inking. I still like to do that traditionally with brush and ink. If you haven't tried the program or are skeptical, don't be. It's great for the perspective tool alone! That has saved me so much time it's not even funny!

Kamen Rider Booyah!

A quickie digital color sketch of my favorite Kamen Riders! (Double, Decade, OOO, and Kabuto!)

And now for a little more explanation:

In a previous post I explained how much I grew up loving Power rangers/Sentai, but I also wanted to get a chance to spotlight Kamen Rider! If you aren't familiar, American television tried to bring it over in the form of Masked Rider. It was pretty bad, which is why I put it out of my memory. A few years ago I got back into the franchise overseas, and they do not disappoint. If you get the chance, find Kamen Rider Decade online to watch. It's a great place to start.

Anyways, I brought it up because recently I've been hunting down and reading Kamen Rider comics. They have some pretty amazing layouts! Here's just a few examples of some of the pages from Kamen Rider Spirits illustrated by Kenichi Muraeda.

Both of these layouts are just insane. The first with the horizontal panels, building the pace and staging, and also building suspense. Then the vertical panel page gives an eerie sense to it! I just can't get enough of it!

Not only are the layouts great, but the action is done so well too! It's one of the few comics based off a franchise that doesn't let you down. You get the sense that the artist is a fan of the series and loves drawing these pages. I still can't get over how cool the first panel on the page above, uses strong silhouettes for the dynamic action.

I'll finish up by showing this two page sequence, which is one of the coolest ways to setup an arrival of a badass character. Hope this gets y'all as excited about the series as I am, now I just wish there were more translated!

The Past and the Future!

So this past year has been pretty great. I feel rejuvenated now more than ever! Here's a few things I accomplished:

Going back to school to finish my degree.
-- I can't explain how much I thrive in the school environment, and enjoy the people I am surrounded by. Professors and peers really push me! Hope to finish this next year, and be able to someday teach in the near future as well. That's the plan at least!

Got a series of books I'm going to be writing and drawing approved! YAY!
-- I'm so pumped about this. It's a story I've wanted to do since I finished The Return of King Doug, and can't wait for y'all to see it and hold it in your hands! I'm inking Volume 1 now, and thumb nailing Volume 2. Get ready for it to kick off 2013!

Got to go to Emerald City Comic Con in Seattle!
-- I was super fortunate to be able to get across country this past March and attend the show for the first time! It was just like I had heard. GREAT! I got to meet and make a lot of new friends, and catch up with some old ones I don't get to see regularly at east coast shows. I didn't know a whole lot of people since it was a west coast show, but I forced myself to talk to people and everyone was super nice and open. I guess half the time it's nice to know how endearing the comics community really is! And this year, I'm not only tabling, but got the honor of being in their annual Monsters and Dames art book.

Live on the West Coast
-- I'm currently interning at Periscope Studio in Portland, and have been here since Thanksgiving. It was a bit of a change but I can't complain in the slightest. Everyone is extremely nice and helpful. This is the first time I've been out of the South for more than a week, and I gotta say it's such a refreshing change. I love my home back in Georgia, but the Northwest is welcoming. It's nice to leave the nest, if y'all know what I mean.

Alright well 2011 was a great year, but I am even more excited for the next 2 years to come. 2012 holds a lot, and what I will be probably working on the whole year will hopefully start coming to fruition beginning in the summer and blasting through into 2013!

Goals for 2012:

Finish 2 volumes of ********, before it's released.
Start a webcomic by the summer, and stick to a normal update schedule.
Make a new website, and update regularly. (heh, I WILL!)
Experiment more with screen printing.
Make a good thesis that will be applicable to other cartoonists.
Finish school and get my degree.

These are some pretty lofty goals, but I think it'll be a good year ahead! Hope everyone has set goals for themselves as well! Let's all do well over the next 12 months! :D

Working Digitally and Researching!

I've been using Manga Studio for the last year, but usually just for the layout and pencil stage, but recently I tried using it to do some illustration work. Here's the black and white of what I was able to do. It's a little looser and sketchier than what I would normally do with traditional tools, but I still enjoy the end product. Hope you like them as well!

I ended up color these for my friend Jackie who writes for the Art 21 blog. I'll repost about it with a link to the actual article when it goes up. It's about this man named David Maclean, a writer, who woke up in India with memory loss. You can listen to his account on This American Life. Pretty scary!

Also things have been going great at my internship so far at Periscope Studio. I can't describe the feeling of working in a real comic studio. I feel like I'm getting more work done than usual. Also because if I wasn't they'd probably call me out!

Also, I've been doing a lot of research for the book I am working on currently. There is a cockpit and when doing an image search these are what I stumbled upon! Some of these are kinda amazing, and I just wanted to share what I found.

Sketchbook stuff!

I'm feeling like things are starting to pull together. I'm starting to prep for Emerald City Comic Con at the end of March and should have the new website up and running before then, so be on the lookout!

Also it feels good to be back in the inking process. I've penciled a bunch and am gonna start plowing through them over the next two months. I'll post up some non-spoiler panels!

Also if you didn't know already, I'm a Super Sentai fan(power rangers). I've loved this stuff since I was a kid. And I saw these images online the other day! I'm pumped that the new show for this next year is Gobusters! They are a team of three with sidekick machines, and theses machines will turn into the heads for their mechs! CANNOT WAIT!

I've been in Portland for a few days now and it's been really great! Still getting used to the weather since it's quite a change from the South, but overall been an exciting time! Everyone is super welcoming, and I think I'm starting to feel like it's not a vacation anymore but that I am settling in for awhile now. Hope everyone has a safe and fun holiday weekend!

West Coast Calling!

I am now on the west coast! I left Atlanta at 7am yesterday, and got in around 1pm Portland, Oregon time. I'm all settled into the apartment I'm sharing with my old roomie, Brad and his wife, Andrea! I think I was misled.

It was warm and sunny when I got here, and today it is rainy. Well, I guess it's just going to be something I'll get used to!

I'm gonna be working on finishing Megagogo while I'm out here. Here's a screen cap of the pencils I've been doing in Manga Studio.

End of Quarter! Portland Oregon Bound!

So, my Fall quarter of my schooling has finished and I'm all packed up for the winter. I leave this Sunday to head to Portland, Oregon for an internship at the one and only Periscope Studio! I can't wait to take as much out of the experience at the studio and learn from all their members. Also I'm looking forward to getting out of the South for an extended period of time, and get the most out of the hub for cartoonists which is Portland! I dunno how to feel about the weather, we'll see, but I'm sure I'll get used to it!

I enjoy school, but I'm excited about the amount of work I'll be able to get done on some of my pro work while I'm doing my independent studies on the west coast! Speaking of which, here's some non-spoiler panels from Megagogo that will hopefully get you pumped about what's to come in the future!

I don't want to give too much away and I don't think I am by showing you these panels. They aren't toned or lettered yet, but just a peek at what's to come!

Also here's an exercise using 1, 2, and 3 pt perspective!

Monsters and Facial Exercises!

First off here's a color monster drawing! RAAAWR!

I wanted a way to warm up before penciling and inking, so I started doing this exercise recently to get all the nervousness out of my hands before hitting a page. I've found recently too, that I enjoy only drawing in pens and markers in my sketchbook. Sure, I'll make mistakes and I'll have bad drawings, but no every drawing is going to be pretty, right?

I just wanted to use my sketchbook to have fun drawing. Plus it helps me come up with background characters for other possible stories!

I start by filling a page loosely with random shapes for heads. I wanted to stick away from traditional shaped heads, so that I could force myself to come up with something interesting and make a more exaggerated character from just a quick, loose shape. This is what I start with:

After I've laid these quick shapes down then I just have fun and let my hand do the creating. It's not really something I think about too much. It's just a way to step away from work and have fun drawing! These are some of what happens after I draw over the shape!

Lettering Exercise and Sketchbookin'

I've been thinking more and more about handlettering. I started using an Ames lettering guide again recently and forgot how much I do actually enjoy using it. It makes the art seem more together. I've been told in the past that the first thing you'll notice on a page is bad lettering and that is totally true. If the art is rough and sketchy or loose, you don't want to have a slick comic font with it! Here are some tests and playing around at different sizes and what not!

For great examples of lettering, I would definitely refer to either Dustin Harbin or Rich Tommaso! Each of them have an incredible grasp of how to do it and do it well! Check them out at their respective sites!

That's also most of the sketches from my current sketchbook that I can share with you! On to a new sketchbook! I make my own up at school, and highly recommend making them yourself! They are cheaper and you can use different types of paper. I use Hammermill 8.5" x 11" Laser Print paper, the 32 lb. kind. It's great for sketching with pens and takes a fat marker pretty well!

I just started making my own this year! That's two down since I started this summer, and hope to be able to fill another before the end of 2011. We'll see. Anyways, have a great week!

Loose Ends! B.P.R.D.! Where The Wild Things Are!

So as promised, the three illustrations this week are fully rendered drawings, not relying just on line! YAY! Again with these I was only allowed to use certain tools for each. One is only with pens/markers, another with only nib/croquill, and one only with brushes. Hope you dig!

"Where The Wild Things Are" by Maurice Sendak was one of my all time favorite books as a little kid. I think it's tied with the Corduroy by Donald Freeman. B.P.R.D. is prolly one of my favorite comics right now! I love Guy Davis' art and the stories are super fun, not to mention my bud Tyler Crook is working on B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth, and a fellow Oni brotha with Petrograd! This also leads into Loose Ends by Jason Latour, who's also working on B.P.R.D., Chris Brunner, and Rico Renzi! Damn they are all three stand up guys! Chris rocks the art, Jason slays with words, and Rico dazzles with the colors! Go get it if you're not already!

Adventure Time! Trapjaw! Devilman!

Hope everyone had a fun and safe Halloween!

Here's some illustrations we were working on for my Inking Techniques class. We were only to use line, without spotting black and rely onto on line weight. One we could only use pens/markers, another only nib/croquill, and the final only brush, and no rendering on any of them! I never really thought I relied so much on black placement until we had to do this, and realizing how much of a struggle it was to not take a fat brush and lay down some ink. AUGH! but regardless, I try, and I'm in school to learn, so learn I shall! Hope you enjoy!

Sketchbook and Background fun!

Here's a piece from class. I took three backgrounds from thumbnail studies and finished them up and added figures into them. We had to incorporate an old person, an old timey weightlifter, and a young person.

Also here is some scans from my sketchbook! Some are just drawings of other students and some are thumbnails for Halloween illustrations, which if time allowed, I will post finished versions before Halloween!

Here's some sketches from my drawing class. We've been looking at stills from black and white movies and sketching quickly the compositions of the shots. The Clown Dimension!

Here's some color studies of environments for my Clown world or dimension, whatever you fancy. Also some clown characters from that world and a few props! Hope you enjoy!

This is Clown mountain or Clown Zero. It's the original clown. It's been there since the beginning of clown time. It's so old and kept growing that now it sleeps and has become a part of the landscape.

This is the Land of Smoke and Mirrors where the "magic" kind live. The magicians are the evil doers in this world. Do not mess with the MAGIC! You be sorry!

Color Study of the Candy Caverns. Don't get lost in them!

Here are some of the characters:

Sweet Potato! She's half clown/half magician. She

accidentally killed her dad by making him laugh to death.

This majestic beast is known as Cheesecake! He's a former

world heavyweight champion of the world in boxing. Whatever

you do, do NOT make fun of his shoes! You'll be sorry!

Who else could be an enemy to a clown but a mime. This is the

deadliest known to date, MIME PRIME! You won't hear him coming

because he's that good! He could be right behind you and you wouldn't know it!

Here are some props for that world!

Cheesecake's Super Death Gloves!

Booty Bombs! When people where cut in half during the evil magic tricks some

of the bottom halves escaped and survived in the wild. The mimes have caught them,

and rigged them with explosives! Pull the underwear tag and they start running!

When you smell a stench, you better run your butt off! (forgive the pun)

Clown comic! WHATWHAT!

New short story. I'm gonna try and do little short clown stories every now and again and post them up here on the blog! I don't know why but clowns are really fun to draw. Maybe it's that I imagine they all have afros or probably because they exist in their own little world.

So here's a short story(without lettering right now, sorry) about a hunter and his son tracking wild balloon animals! Beware the balloons!

Environments Studies! and the BEST COMIC EVER!

Here's a bunch of sketchbooks stuff trying to work on some backgrounds and environments, but mostly just studying the back and white shapes and how they interact. All done with some pitt or mircon pens. I dunno, I just feel like if you draw in pen, you gotta be serious with the lines you throw down! And at least if you mess up, you'll learn from the mistakes. Here ya go!

Also here's a 1 page exercise comic from class that we had to do

with only lettering and SFX. It's supposed to focus on the text and dialogue,

and try volume change. And it's the best comic I've ever done! (maybe)

Also, on a closing note, I will not be at NYCC this weekend. But you should totally swing by the Oni Press Booth and go visit some of my most badass cartoonist friends there! Like Chris Schweizer! (Nicest guy in comics) Or Jarrett Williams! (The baddest dood on the comics block! and also a super nice guy!) Representin' the South! Woot! And yeah, have a great week!

Here's a some sketchbook stuff, and some photos from Dragon Con 2011. If you're not familiar with DragonCon it's a fantasy/scifi/comic convention that takes place every year in Atlanta. It's one of the better shows for seeing fun costumes!

Heroes Con 2011 Wrapup!

Heroes Con 2011 was a blast! I love that show! Big thanks to Rico Renzi for letting me table this year! I met a bunch of great people and saw other wonderful people that I only get to at cons, so it was an overall great weekend! Here are some photos of sketches from the show! Enjoy!

When I had some free time, I was sketching some clown characters for some more clown comics! Those will be updating soon, so get ready! Also I love Kamen Rider, so I was playing around with the idea of Kamen Cowboys! I dunno, it's silly but I love those shows.

HEROES CON 2011!

Hey Everybody! Y'all should come out to Heroes Con this weekend in Charlotte, North Carolina! There are gonna be a bunch of awesome cartoonists! It's prolly my favorite con! Chris Schweizer Sketchbook Release!

Hey Y'all! My buddy, Chris Schweizer, just released his enormous sketchbook! He had an event for the book release up at school and it was a great turn out! I picked up a copy of the book which is a whopping 180 pp or so!

Also he drew a picture for me in the front of it! I asked him to draw me on a lily pad farting in a frog's face. Weird request, I know, but hey I wanna give him a challenge!

I don't want to spoil any more images from it! Go pick one up for yourself! If you are going to be at Heroes Con this upcoming weekend in Charlotte, NC, swing by his booth and pick one up!

If you want some free sketches from me, you can come by and get some of dat. I'll be at Criminal Records from 11 to 1, and then Oxford Comics from 1 to 4. Most likely I'll be back over at the record store to go and see the Adam Warrock show at 6pm, so COME ON OUT TO ALL THEEEZ EVENTS!

Fluke 2011 was awesome! I think this was the best year by far. Go check out the writeup from a bunch of peeps over at ROBOT6! Robert and Patrick did a kickass job and made the whole event super sweet! If you are a cartoonist in the South, y'all should be going to this show!

Twas a weekend of seeing friendly faces and good times. I always enjoy it because I get my giggles out every year. Speakin of friends check out how weird these are in comparison. One picture is from FLUKE 2011, and the other is from SDCC 2007. I've known Chris Schweizer (Crogan Adventures) for almost five years now. It feels weird, but he's an amazing cartoonist, and if you don't know who he is, you should feel like a dumbass. So yeah, check him out y'all.

So here's a 90 minute sketch I did of Man Thing! I'm tryin' to get looser with inking and workin it out just in little sketches right now. I dunno, not too shabby for 90 minutes. More of these to come soon!

Ever wonder what it would look like if Osamu Tezuka's BlackJack character was a little more US patriotic? No? Well tough titty, because here's what it would look like!

For realz tho, this is kinda pertaining to something else somewhat related. The other day CBR posted an article about Black Panther becoming "American Panther". Is "American" a color? Uh HELLZ YEAH IT IS! AND THESE COLORS DO NOT RUN! (because they are digitally done.)

Also FLUKE Mini Comics and Zine Festival is comin' up in two weeks in Athens, Ga! Everyone in the southern states should try and make it to that show! It's small but a lot of fun. And just as a heads up as well, I know I've posted on a blog, and then promised to stay up to date and then don't, but now I have no choice. This is also coinciding with a class I have at school, so if I don't I fail. All around it's good for everybody!
