I remember being introduced to Javier Pulido and Marcos Martin's works in college through Batgirl and Robin Year Ones. I have to admit I wasn't a huge fan at first, but have since grown to love whatever they do. They are probably two of the only people that I will buy something with their name on it, since most likely it will make me happy! If you ain't familiar with them, go read Human Target to start! I loved that series and they both worked on it!
Both work for mainstream publishers but don't really push the hardcore realist drawing style. Instead they both take a simpler route and focus on the layouts and compositions. I really dig the simple style and it gets right to the point. I realize too that whomever colors them also brings up the level of the work as well!
Here's some examples of their work!
And Marcos Martin:
Gah! So good! I dunno, they both do things with their layouts that push storytelling norms and make the ready think about how to read the comic. I enjoy that, but I also enjoy as an artist wanting to try and implement these types of tools into my own craft. I always get eager to see their work when their names are on a title. I know Javier Pulido is currently on the Shade for DC, and Marcos Martin in working on Daredevil with a slew of other amazing artists as well!
They make reading mainstream comics for me refreshing and fun! Hope you enjoy reading them as well! Thursday I'll spotlight two more people that artists that I pick up pretty much anything they put their name on as well. Have a great week y'all!
PS. And if you have some time and want to read a great interview, head over to the Comics Reporter and read an interview with my bud, Chris Schweizer! It's lengthy, but awesome! And like the other two, if you aren't familiar with his work, you should be!
